Small stone nativity This miniature Humanga nativity measures only about 9cm and yet amazingly has a full nativity scene meticulously carved within! Huamanga stone carvings are found, as their name indicates, in the city of Huamanga, Ayacucho and the stone itself is excavated from nearby quarries in Cangallo.   Pristine Piedra of Huamanga, (Huamanga stone) is a calcareous, translucent stone which is extremely soft and easy to work with and thus allowing it to become a vehicle for local artisans to express their art.  This however, has also meant that many older pieces have not survived the passing of time. *Huamanga stone carvings represent an original and unique form of expression in Latin American art. The carving of stones was very popular during the XVII century, a time when Spanish religious artists were characterized for the magnificent sense of movement which their sculptures possessed. Later, in the XIX and XX centuries, there was revival of Huamanga stone carving, however this time by the carvers from the indigenous communities who in turn gave the pieces their own particular style
